Mamma Mia or Mamma Chia?
Chia seeds have found their way into everything from pasta to hamburgers, and prominent US organic fruit juice brand Mamma Chia began selling seed-infused drinks into Whole Foods in autumn 2011.
No word as to whether that brand will hit the UK anytime soon, but in any case Grazia magazine believes chia can sow the seeds of success over there.
Often described as an ‘ancient grain’ (technically it’s a seed) chia is high in fiber, omega3 linolenic acid and antioxidants as well as calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, iron and zine.
Demand for the seeds in cereals, snacks and drinks means the chia category is tipped by Nutrition Business Journal to be worth a stunning $1bn in the US by 2020.
