Budweiser callbox advert: ‘Same (young) audience, no escape’
After seeing an alcohol ad – in this case for Budweiser – sited inside a phone box near Living Waters Lutheran College (which educates kids from kindergarten to Year 12 age) for the fourth time inside 20 months, one concerned staff member wrote to the AARB stressing their concerns that such products were always promoted as ‘fun’ to pupils.
“In effect these students are seeing this ad twice a day five days a week. Very good placement from an advertiser’s point of view. Same audience, no escape. Message drummed in whether they like it or not,” they wrote.
Upholding this complaint, the panel said the advert contravened its placement code, and asked the advertiser, Lion, to consider its determination in relation to future advert placement, but said it was “not aware of any action taken…in regard to the determination”.
