Healthy hearts, and healthy blood glucose
Our next port of call was a chat over coffee with global marketing programs manager at Cargill Health and Nutrition, Pam Stauffer.
People that think of Cargill as an agri-food giant best known for milling flour, processing oilseeds and churning out tons of HFCS may be surprised to learn that it also has an extensive branded portfolio of functional health ingredients from Regenasure glucosamine to Barliv betafiber, Oligofiber inulin, Xtend sucromalt and CoroWise plant sterols, she said.
As for CoroWise, while its one clear, proven, benefit is that it can lower LDL cholesterol, consumer research suggests that more generic heart health claims are now resonating with the public, she said.
“For CoroWise, we think there is more potential in trying to appeal to a broader range of consumers that want to stay healthy as well as people specifically trying to control their cholesterol."
Similarly, while Cargill’s low-glycemic sweetener Xtend Sucromalt is best-known for featuring in Glucerna (which is targeted at diabetics), Cargill is also seeking out broader application opportunities in the health and wellness market, where consumers are looking for sustained energy, she said.
“We’d love to really crack the sports nutrition space.”
