Thermo Electron launches on-line CO2 analyser

Thermo Electron has introduced a continuous on-line CO2 analyser
that gives fizzy drink manufacturers early detection of CO2
contamination.

The company claims that the Pulsar EX CO2 Quality Assurance system is a cost-effective means of improving product quality and protecting brand investment. The analyser is also well suited ideal for other applications involving the use of CO2, such as for food products packed in modified air packaging (MAP).

Carbon dioxide is a bacteriostatic and fungistatic agent - it slows down and reduces the proliferation of aerobic bacteria and moulds, especially in the absence of oxygen. This is why it is used extensively in MAP packaging.

The gas is very soluble in water and fats. However this property may promote development of a slightly acidic taste if CO2 use is not properly controlled, hence the need for thorough analysis in carbonated beverage production.

Indeed, carbon dioxide purity is critical to the quality of products such as carbonated beverages, and must comply with standards set by the International Society of Beverage Technologists.

Thermo says that the highly sensitive Pulsar EX monitors contaminant levels in beverage-grade CO2 by automatically sampling at multiple stages along the line, from point of delivery right through to point of use, ensuring that the final product's quality is unaffected. The early detection of contamination makes this system extremely cost-effective.

The analyser, which continuously monitors contaminants such as hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and sulphur, requires little human intervention with an automatic calibration system that guarantees optimum performance at all times. This is facilitated by the Pulsar EX's internal permeation tubes, which eliminate the use of external gas cylinders and allow for unattended calibration.

Contained in a space saving 19-inch rack, the Pulsar EX has room for up to four analyser modules. Each rack system is equipped with a common power input and a shared sample input panel. Sample lines for vapour and liquid are also available.

Thermo claims that the simple-to-use Pulsar EX provides continuous updated on-screen results and system status including that of the alarms which are adjustable for impurity concentration, trends, and system malfunctions. A comprehensive reporting package is also included.

Configured with Digital I/O for external interfacing, the analyser can be equipped with a Loading Dock Interface (LDI) for truck testing.

US-based Thermo Electron has revenues of more than $2 billion, and employs 10,000 people in 30 countries.
