The awards ceremony was held at Interpack 2014, in Dusseldorf (May 8-14), and the entries are judged in seven categories: beverage, electronics, food, health and beauty, household, pharmaceutical and medical, and other.
WPO also recognised three special categories in Marketing, Sustainability and the President’s Award.
Dr Gordon Stewart, vice president, WPO, told FoodProductionDaily it was starting to see a trend of improved performance packaging from developing countries but it wanted to see more people ‘break the mould’ in their designs.
Sustainability key concern
“The main thing that has changed in WPO award entries over the years has been the increasing emphasis on sustainability both in the packs themselves and the efforts they make to try to ensure less product spoilage,” he said.
“We get several ‘wow’ moments each year and often these are for the packs that win the special awards for marketing, sustainability and especially the president’s award which is the pack that most impresses the judges and of course the president.
“In future, we would like to see more genuine innovation in the packs. Lots are really developments of existing themes and ideas, which is great but the ones that stand out are those that break the mould.”
FPD Top 10
FPD has picked its Top 10 of the WPO award winners including Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000 Edge, Italy, Cadbury Value Added Flow Pack (VAFP) by Nampak Flexible Pinetown, South Africa’s first re-closable chocolate packaging and Loop organic egg packaging by students Sumeyye Sarar & Reyhan Cevik from Meliksah University/Industrial Product Design, Turkey.
Stewart said WPO was now preparing for next year’s show.
“Recognised packaging awards take place all over the world throughout the year so we are always preparing for the next WorldStar Awards,” he added.
“The awards ceremony is a great event and it is so special to meet people from all over the world who have been successful.”
