Energy shots are safe if used according to instructions, says Red Bull, as the German risk assessor BfR calls for a ban on energy shots because consumers could not be trusted to drink ‘safe’ amounts.

A spokesperson for the Austrian company told NutraIngredients: “This BfR opinion confirms that Red Bull Energy Shots are safe if used according to instructions. This adds to the opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) which has already confirmed the safety of the ingredients in Red Bull Energy Shot. The recommended dosage of one bottle of Red Bull Energy Shot (60ml) contains 80 mg caffeine which corresponds to a cup of coffee.

“Red Bull Energy Shot is lawfully marketed in ten member states of the European Union (and also Switzerland). Therefore, based on the principle of free movement of goods in the EU, Red Bull Energy Shot can be lawfully marketed in all EU Member States without the need for further authorization,” added the spokesperson.
