FoodProductionDaily.com caught up with Sweden-based manufacturer Ecolean as it unveiled its new lightweight aseptic packaging system for liquid food products in Cologne.

According to the company, its latest packaging development was informed by market research undertaken with its customer base.

Ecolean explained that the package is made up of a a flexible multi-layered polymer film consisting of 60 per cent polyethylene and polypropylene and 40 per cent calcium carbonate.

The package weighs just 14 grams, which is a 40 to 50 per cent reduction on a conventional liquid food carton or bottle, added the manufacturer:

"Once empty it is as flat as an envelope which saves space in the trashbag. With its unique thin material and durable, lightweight construction the package saves energy during production, transport and waste handling."
