Successful sustainability initiatives need to consider how farmers work and think, and involve co-operation between all parties, says SVZ International.

SVZ supplies processed fruit and vegetable ingredients to food and drink manufacturers around the globe. It is owned by a farming co-operative, and says that ‘sustainability is more than just a commercial need, it is an essential responsibility’.

So what exactly does sustainability mean? And what are the biggest challenges for sustainability? We put the questions to Jobien Laurijssen, sustainability manager, SVZ, while seeing raspberries harvested in Poland.

“For us, it’s really important to not dictate to the farmer or try to pretend to be the farmer, but really to try to understand his way of thinking and try together to find a solution on how this could be more sustainable,” said Laurijssen.

Once picked, raspberries are sent to the nearby processing facility in Tomaszów.

SVZ makes ingredients for industries including beverage, dairy, ice cream, bakery and confectionery.
