Spanish drinks producer Damm, known for its Estrella Damm lager, is opening its first brewery in the UK, according to The Times.

The newspaper reported that Damm is investing £50m to build a “state-of-the-art brewery in Bedford”.

It was first reported in October 2022 that Damm was set to acquire Eagle Brewery in Bedford from Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC), with that deal confirmed in January 2023 by law firm Taylor Wessing which assisted on the move.

Headquartered in Barcelona, Damm produces a wide range of beer brands such as Estrella Damm, Daura and Malquerida, while it also manufactures soft drinks and coffees.

Damm is led by Demetrio Carceller Arce, who inherited the business from his father, and operates two breweries in Barcelona, the Old Brewery and El Prat Brewery.

Commenting on the move, a spokesman for Damm told The Times: “The UK is the most important market for Estrella Damm outside its home country. This investment in Bedford, where we will be producing some formats, reflects our long-term commitment to the country and our devotion to UK consumers.

“Bedford is strategically located within the UK. Its proximity to London makes the location very attractive for us.”

Food Manufacture has reached out to Damm for further details.

In other news, Wrexham Lager has secured new listings across its lager and export range with Asda and Sainsbury’s in Wales.
