Symrise subsidiary DrinkStar is taking over much of the European distribution of Velcorin, a microbial control agent for drinks that is produced by Lanxess.

DrinkStar has been one of the distributors of Velcorin for some years and is now increasing its involvement with the product, taking over sales and technical support for customers throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe region from January 2011.

In northern Germany and Scandinavia, BIS E.M.S. had previously been responsible for sales and technical support for Velcorin customers.

Explaining the change, a spokesperson for Lanxess told BeverageDaily.com: “The main reason for this measure is to optimize the distribution channels. DrinkStar, with more than 30 years of experience in Velcorin, is ideally set up for sales and technical support of the effective Lanxess beverage stabilizer.”

In the meantime, BIS E.M.S. will continue to produce, service and further develop the Velcorin DT dosing units in cooperation with Lanxess. The units are used by manufacturers for precise metering of Velcorin during the beverage filling process.

Velcorin itself performs an antimicrobial function in non-alcoholic drinks and wine. Once added to drinks it degrades completely in formulation leaving tiny amount of methanol and carbon dioxide.

Lanxess claims that the agent is effective at providing protection against microorganisms in cold fill or HTST pasteurised beverages without affecting taste.
