Ardagh Group will close its Salem glass container facility this year, due to the ‘loss of significant business at the facility.’

The plant in New Jersey, US, is one of 16 the company operates in North America.

The plant will close on or after October 15. Around 290 employees will be affected by the closure.

Speaking yesterday, John Riordan, president and CEO, Ardagh Group, Glass – North America, said “While this is certainly a difficult day for the Salem facility and its employees, the company remains firmly committed to ensuring the long-term competitiveness of its glass container business.

Our company will continue to focus on making the changes required to ensure our lasting success, as we continuously enhance our ability to meet our customers’ demand for high quality, cost competitive glass packaging.

Rick Poynter, senior vice president, Human Resources, Ardagh Group, Americas, said the company would work with local organizations and other company locations to help identify job opportunities for Salem employees. The company will honor all of its commitments under the collective bargaining agreements, and to employees, customers and suppliers, he added.

The plant celebrated its 150th anniversary last year.

It was formerly owned by Anchor Glass Container Corp until Ardagh bought it in 2012.

Ardagh Group is based in Luxembourg, and produces packaging for food, beverage and consumer care brands. It has operations in 24 countries and global sales of €4.8bn ($6.5bn).
