France steals ‘pole position’ in UK online wine sales
Our sister publication Harpers Wine & Spirit is running a French wine summit today, and Tim Wilson, MD of Wilson Drinks Report told delegates that French wine is leading the way with the UK’s leading online retailers – with value sales up 13.4% and volume sales up 11% from July-December 2013.
Wilson described Amazon – which now lists 22,000 wines, 3,000 of which are French – as the "tiger in the grass" and said online was one of the biggest opportunities for French wine.
UK off-trade sales of French wine compiled by IRI MAT to September 13 2014 showed French value sales down 1.4% to £605m ($976m), while off-premise volumes fell 7.2% in the same period.
