The organisers of Drinktec have agreed to reduce the length of its 2013 trade show in Germany to five days because of declining numbers on the last day of the fair.

Drinktec management said the 2009 event in Munich was well-attended with around 60,000 visitors but numbers dropped noticeably on the Saturday, the last day of the fair.

Feedback from exhibitors found that the great majority were in favour of dropping the Saturday from the schedule for 2013.

Drinktec organisers said visitors to specialist trade fairs are less and less prepared to spend the Saturday at the fair. At Drinktec, the Munich trade fair also has to compete on the Saturday with the first day of the Oktoberfest.

In addition, making Friday the last day of the show is expected to make it easier to transport stand equipment away because the Sunday ban on truck movement in Germany can be easily avoided.

“The Saturday was in the end an anachronism, quite simply it no longer fits into modern trade-fair practices,” said Dr Reinhard Pfeiffer, the managing director at Messe München responsible for Drinktec.
