Kraft Heinz, Gerber, Once Upon a Farm are pouring into kids’ hydration

While some health experts emphasize that kids and teens can hydrate with plain water, brands are building relevance within the kids' hydration category with low-to-no-sugar alternatives to sports drinks in fruity flavors, electrolytes and natural ingredients.

While experts say water is enough to hydrate healthy kids, brands are capturing caregivers’ preferences for better-for-you hydration products that deliver on function, flavor and natural ingredients

Hydration is emerging as one of the fastest growing areas within the kid’s beverage category as caregivers increasingly scrutinize ingredient labels looking for healthier, convenient, functional and nutritious options.

While hydration-forward products (electrolytes, enhanced waters, hydration beverages) are gaining share in the US kids’ drink market, the landscape is still smaller than the broader juice and milk categories, according to Astute Analytica. Zero-sugar flavored waters made up 18% of multipack unit sales, surpassing traditional juice boxes at 16% in 2024. However, electrolyte waters are picking up pace, with 15% unit growth in the same year.

The $2.45 billion and growing global kids’ hydration market comes as caregivers are increasingly looking for alternatives to traditional juice boxes and sports drinks, moving toward products positioned around hydration, reduced or no sugar and functional nutrition, according to Growth Market Reports.

The trend also aligns with broader health movements shaping consumer interest in nutrition as health organizations and policy reforms promote whole, nutrient dense foods. These efforts prompted industry-wide reformulation initiatives aimed at removing artificial dyes and additives from ingredient lists.

Amid the growing healthier food movement, some experts note that water may be enough for kids. Updated hydration recommendations from national research program Healthy Eating Research emphasize that hydration needs can be met with water for children ages 5 – 18, while discouraging sugar-sweetened beverages, non-sugar sweeteners, caffeine and other stimulants. HER’s panel notes that children’s electrolyte drinks or hydration panels may be unnecessary for healthy kids as these products may include sugars, sweeteners or other ingredients devoid of meaningful benefits.

Brands tap into better-for-you hydration and nutrition-forward claims

A wave of recently launched kid-focused beverages emphasizes electrolytes, vitamins, lower sugar content and familiar formats aligning with caregivers’ preferences for healthier, functional options and kids’ love of fun flavors.

Earlier this month, Once Upon a Farm launched Electrolyte Blends – a line of USDA Organic, non-GMO fruit and vegetable pouches made with coconut water and sea salt. Available in Strawberry Kiwi, Apple Berry Punch and Guava Strawberry varieties, the 4-ounce pouches contain no added sugar, artificial flavors or artificial colors. The company positions the products around supporting “daily hydration and electrolyte balance” rather than making broader functional claims.

Gerber positioned its Gerberlyte beverage launched in September as an organic oral rehydration solution for toddlers and young children. The USDA-Organic beverage contains electrolytes, zinc and coconut water. Total sugar content depends on format – for example, the 32-ounce Berry Blend contains 8 grams of total sugar (including 4 grams of added sugar per 4-ounce serving) while one 4-ounce bottle contains 2 grams of total sugars (including 1 gram of added sugar per serving). Its lineup of Strawberry Kiwi, Berry Blend and Tropical Punch flavors are made with natural flavors and devoid of artificial dyes and sweeteners.

Kraft Heinz expanded its legacy Capri Sun brand into the hydration space with Capri Sun Hydrate launched in April. Encased in its iconic 6-ounce silver pouch, Capri Sun Hydrate contains an electrolyte blend and vitamin E. Kraft Heinz says it contains 50% less sugar than leading sports drinks at 5 grams per sugar per pouch with no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Flavors include Fruit Punch, Tropical Punch and Lemon & Lime.

In May, Kraft Heinz expanded another legacy brand - Kool-Aid - with its Kool-Aid Hydration powders. The single-serve powder sticks contain no sugar or artificial dyes with an electrolyte blend made of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. The powders are dyed with natural colors such as vegetable juice and spirulina extract – which is part of Kraft Heinz’s commitment to phase out artificial colors across its portfolio by the end of 2027.

In May, startup beverage brand HydroWild debuted its powdered hydration drink mix as an alternative to traditional sports drinks specifically for kids and teens. Each 4.27-gram stick packet is sugar-free and contains seven vitamins (A, C, D, K, B6, B12 and folate) and electrolytes from potassium and magnesium. The brand launched with four flavors – Blue Raspberry, Strawberry Lemonade, Watermelon and Fruit Punch – which are all sweetened with stevia and contain no artificial flavors or colors.
