Canadian company CCL Label has developed patented technology that allows it to supply holographic labels to customers with 3D effects..

Toronto-based CCL said its 3D OVD (optical variable device) technology - situated at its plant in Holzkirchen, Germany - used a unique printing process that enabled all sub-microscopic gratings (including holograms) to be produced and applied in-line with other print.

The printing technology gave licensees full control of the holographic manufacturing process, the company claimed, while other advantages included the ability to apply OVDs to products previously excluded on cost grounds, while no hot or cold foils, adhesives or off-line application equipment was needed.

The technology allowed for in-line processing with other print stations, and labels (pictured) could be printed on conventional printing presses at conventional gravure speeds, CCL Label added.
