The SAI Platform, Regenerating Together Programme (RTP), which officially launched this week (25 June) has been supported by over 40 leading food and agriculture businesses who recently signed a declaration of intent to scale regenerative agriculture.
The list includes large food and drinks groups from Unilever to Arla to Freislandcampina to Aviko.
Global drinks companies signed up include Asahi Group, Carlsberg Group, Diageo, Danone, Suntory and Nestle.
The practical tool is designed to address the challenge of how to ensure progress can be measured consistently and credibly while still reflecting diverse farming realities.
The framework includes guidance for independent verification and benchmarking, which according to SAI will help improve “consistency, credibility and transparency” across the sector.
The voluntary programme launch follows more than four years of collaboration including pilot initiatives spanning 23 production systems and 25 countries.
It has been developed with input from farmers, agronomists, NGOs, academia, and industry.
At the core of the RTP is a framework which provides a practical four-step process across large and small-scale crop, beef and dairy production systems which is applicable across all geographies.
The programme has also developed verification and benchmarking protocols to enable regenerative agriculture efforts to be independently verified. SAI said it would support “greater consistency, credibility and transparency” .
Dionys Forster, Director General at SAI Platform, said: “Today represents a landmark moment for regenerative agriculture and is the result of years of collaboration across the sector.
“The level of collaboration behind the Regenerating Together Programme reflects a growing recognition that meaningful progress will only come through shared approaches and collective action.”
