Constellation Brands acquires minority stake in craft rum maker Montanya Distillers
Montanya Distillers was founded in 2008 in Colorado by Karen and Brice Hoskin. It produces its ‘high mountain rum’ from its base at 9,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains – ‘our location is great for making rum since the altitude positively affects almost every aspect of fermenting, distilling and aging rum,’ according to the distillery.
Its products include Montanya Platino, Montanya Oro, and Montanya Exclusiva. The company uses non-GMO sugar cane, pure local water and is a certified B Corp.
Constellation Brands has acquired a minority stake in the company through its Ventures’ Focus on Female Founders program, which invests in female-led businesses. Karen Hoskin, founder, president and CEO of Montanya Distillers, will stay with the company.
Montanya’s rums are distributed across 42 states and the company exports to seven countries including Canada and the UK.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
