After being one of the earliest developers of THC-infused beverages, California-based Sprig entered the CBD market this year with a line of CBD sparkling sodas. These sodas are now sold at retailers in nine states.

Sprig launched in 2015 with THC-infused Citrus Original and Citrus Zero Sugar sodas. Its "award-winning THC-infused soda is sold in hundreds of dispensaries" in California and came before the current wave of cannabis beverage launches.

Sprig’s THC sodas contain 10mg of THC per can and can only be purchased at licensed retailers by consumers who are over the age of 21.

All the benefits, none of the high

CBD, THC’s non-psychoactive cousin, has recently gained a lot of traction in the health and wellness CPG industry. New sodas, sparkling waters, beer alternatives and even smoothies are launching infused with low concentrations of CBD, meant to prompt stress relief and relaxation benefits.

Products containing CBD do not provide a ‘high’ as often associated with marijuana and can be sold anywhere in the US. Given Sprig’s success with its THC drinks and the current market affinity for CBD products, it introduced a line of four CBD soda flavors in summer 2018.

Citrus Zero Sugar, Sparkling Lemon Tea Zero Sugar and Melon Zero Sugar are sweetened with stevia and erythritol, while Citrus Original is sweetened with cane sugar. All flavors contain 20mg of CBD each.

Lisi Willner, VP of marketing at Sprig, told BeverageDaily “The taste is what people love most about our sodas. Most edibles taste like weed, but we're proud to say that Sprig is way different … Our CBD soda lets people reap the benefits of cannabis without getting high.”

Progressive market growth

Since launching in July, the line has expanded distribution to nine states in total: California, New York, Florida, Nevada and Illinois, recently adding Vermont, Washington, Texas and Pennsylvania in October. The CBD line can also be purchased online in packs of 12 and shipped nationwide.

Michael Lewis, CEO at Sprig, said “Sprig's first three months of sales for our CBD line were beyond our expectations. While we had initially planned for a slower rollout, we decided to add these territories because they are well-informed, progressive markets that are chomping at the bit for a high quality, trustworthy and refreshing CBD beverage. As it stands today, Sprig is the only brand fitting that description.”

To facilitate the growth, Sprig has partnered with four new distribution companies, including Farrell Distribution in Vermont.

Ryan Chaffin, director of marketing and business development at Farrell Distribution, said “Our team has spent a great deal of time looking for a partner that we felt would give us the opportunity to enter this new exciting space, CBD-infused sodas. Sprig was clearly that brand, and we are thrilled to introduce it to the Green Mountain State."
