A new scent-permeation technology was on display at Pack Expo this week. Sniff Seal from Tekni-Plex lets customers smell products through their seal without affecting the quality inside.

The Tri-Seal division of Pennsylvania-based Tekni-Plex debuted new seal solutions at Pack Expo International in this week: branded Luxe seal liners and Sniff Seal closure liners.

The Luxe seal liners feature a redesigned pull-tab that’s easier to peel back than tabs from leading competitors without affecting the strength of the seal. It can also be embossed with logos and brand names to build on marketing potential, especially when paired with transparent capping.

It’s compatible with PET, PE and PP containers and is applicable to any personal care, food or beverage product that may use seal closures, like medicine, cosmetics, probiotic beverages, juice, coffee or tea.

Engaging the senses

According to Tri-Seal, the Sniff Seal liners are all about connecting with customers and engaging their sense of smell in the grocery store. The patented technology enables “scent permeation through an induction seal closure liner without affecting the seal or compromising the contents.”

Now more than ever, consumers are interested in learning about what’s in their favorite products, looking for cleaner, natural ingredients and vetting their purchases in general. Allowing people to ‘try’ something before buying through smell is another step in this process.

The seal works with cosmetic creams and personal care products like deodorants, where scents are most likely to be a factor in purchasing decisions. The seal also prevents people from dipping their hands into such products and contaminating the contents.

David Andrulonis, senior VP of Tri-Seal, said “When a package is returned to the shelf in a compromised condition, it is no longer sellable. As a result, the retail industry experiences a significant amount of loss annually.”

Beyond personal care, the Sniff Seal works best with dry food and beverages that give off a scent, such as coffee, tea or grated cheese. Tri-Seal shared that it’s also possible to combine both the Luxe seal liners and Sniff Seal for all applicable products and traditional liquid drinks.
