Videojet Technologies, which supplies coding, marking and printing technology, has launched a Beverage Hub for manufacturers to keep up-to-date on changing coding and labelling requirements.

The company claims global beverage sales will grow by 3.9% in 2016 compared to 2015 and recent developments in the beverage industry have encouraged manufacturers to find innovative ways to drive sales.

Health & Wellness products

Chirag Sheth, vertical marketing manager, Beverage, Videojet, told BeverageDaily, like most industries, the beverage industry has seen an increasing trend of health and wellness products, varying packaging types, sizes and product requirements.

"Staying on top of consumer preferences is becoming an ever more difficult task for beverage manufacturers and packaging designers," he said.

"The Beverage Hub provides manufacturers with information to meet changing coding and labelling requirements.

"It will also provide application support and educational documentation such as white papers, customer success stories, application videos and regulatory info graphics."

Sheth added, printing best-by dates, lot codes and other information onto the package is essential for beverage manufacturers, as retailers look at this information to help them with stock rotation, and consumers use this information to check for product freshness.

Coding complexity

However, printing the required information is not as straightforward as it sounds.

Different flavors, packaging and nutritional requirements add coding complexity to a beverage manufacturer.

"There are many factors that must be considered when selecting the right type of coding equipment for a specific beverage production line.

"An important role of the coding supplier is to help manufacturers select the type of printer ideally suited to the production setup, and to provide the necessary tools to audit and enforce anti-counterfeit and diversion activities throughout the supply chain.”

Customizable coding technology is also helping manufacturers to directly connect with consumers with the application of intelligent variable codes on their products.

By linking demographic data to specific purchases, manufacturers can push their target marketing efforts to a new level.

We appreciate the trends that are changing the way beverage manufacturers of all sizes are behaving. With the Beverage Hub, we want to make it as simple as possible by providing relevant information they need in a language they can relate to,” said Sheth.

Videojet has a portfolio of beverage coding and marking technology including the continuous inkjet printer (CIJ), a fluid based, non contact printer which can print up to five lines of text, linear and 2D bar codes, or graphics.

It has laser marking systems, from CO2 and fiber lasers to the UV industrial laser, to mark high-contrast, permanent codes onto HDPE substrates.

There asre also large character marking (LCM) printers, for secondary packaging such as cases, and the label printer applicator (LPA) for printing and placing labels of various sizes onto multiple packaging types.
