PepsiCo road testing Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew soda in US
PepsiCo, which owns the Mountain Dew and Doritos brands, this week confirmed reports it is testing new variations of Mountain Dew, including one that incorporates the taste of nacho cheese Doritos, on consumers.
Talk of Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew began on social networking platform Reddit last week, when a Redditor calling himself joe_nipples posted an image of a branded Mountain Dew Dewitos sample stand on his college campus.
"They were giving sample of this," he wrote, "it actually tasted like Doritos."
Students were asked to sample a handful of new Mountain Dew variations, including the Doritos development, before providing feedback, he said.
"I think the flavors were lemon ginger, mango habanero (also weird), and rainbow sherbet which tasted like medicine."
In a statement sent to BeverageDaily.com, PepsiCo confirmed it is running a Mountain Dew tasting program at college and university campuses across the US.
"We are always testing out new flavors of Mountain Dew, and giving our fans a voice in helping decide on the next new product has always been important to us," said a Mountain Dew spokesperson.
"We opened up the DEW flavor vault and gave student a chance to try this Doritos-inspired flavor as part of a small program at colleges and universities."
It gave no indication if or when Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew would reach stores.
PepsiCo has a history of matching Mountain Dew with Doritos.
In 2008, it launched Doritos Quest, a chip with a mystery flavor that was later revealed to be Mountain Dew.
Earlier this year, PepsiCo launched Mountain Dew-flavored Cheetos in Japan.
