US company Advanced Electron Beams (AEB) has launched sterilization equipment at trade Fair Drinktec, Munich, Germany which it claims will revolutionise aseptic bottle filling.

The electron beam sterilisatisation uses less energy, lighter weight packaging and provides significant water savings while improving efficiency and profitability, says the company.

Its e25ITB electron beam emitter has been designed to sterilize the interior of bottle shaped packaging. Surfaces of packaging material are sterilized at high speeds with a stream of energetic electrons.

Since no chemicals are used, there is no need to rinse or dry the material and no risk of residual chemical sterilants contaminating the packaged product, claims the company.

AEB replaces thermal and chemical production processes with its compact electron beam emitters that harness electrons to enable cleaner, less expensive and efficient production,” said a spokesman.

Lighter packaging material

Also, the electron beam treatment takes place at room temperature which is said to allow manufacturers to use lighter packaging material.

In addition to lowering costs, the e25ITB emitter offers sustainable beverage packaging and the bottle sterilization technology that will reduce environmental footprint of the packaging process, says the company.

Mitch Tyson, chief executive officer said: "Beverage manufacturers around the world are eager to address consumer demand for more healthful product offerings and for more sustainable packaging at lower cost.

"AEB's bottle sterilization technology for aseptic packaging will let the beverage industry continue to innovate with new products and new package concepts, while reducing environmental footprint of the packaging process."
