Scotland-based beer maker Brewdog has dropped its legal action against struggle against industry regulator the Portman Group relating to its Speedball beer.

According to David Poley, chief executive of the Portman Group, Brewdog has dropped its threat of legal action.

“They've informed us that they want to draw a line under this dispute,” said Poley. “Marketing alcohol on the theme with illegal drugs is completely indefensible. Therefore, any legal action by them would have been hotly contested by us.

“We're pleased that the company has decided to concentrate on selling responsibly marketed products."

The legal action centred on comments made by Portman Group regarding calls for retailers to drop Speedball beer, due to potential confusion between the name of both the brand and a mix of illegal drugs, were both defamatory and damaging to its business.
