SABMiller says it will further sink its teeth into the Romanian beer market by acquiring a 72 per cent interest in Transylvania-based brewer Bere Azuga.

In avoiding the use of any vampire puns of its own, the company, through its Romania-based Ursus Breweries subsidiary, says the deal will extend SAB’s market share within the country by 0.6 per cent.

Stephan Maria Weber, managing director for Ursus Breweries, said the acquisition of the operations, which includes a brewery near the city of Brasov and is valued at €24.8m, was a significant investment in the country.

“The acquisition of Bere Azuga, which has a strong Romanian heritage, illustrates our determination to offer our customers a choice of high quality brands that span a range of different drinking occasions," she stated.
