A new range of labels are beneficial for the pocket as well as the
environment, its UK supplier claims, as they don't need the paper
traditionally used for lining.

Advanced Dynamics, along with Italian manufacturer Irplast, is distributing a new range of backless labels, promoted as being economical as well as "good for the environment." Most companies in the food and drink industry are having to respond to consumer pressure to turn green for environmental reasons, whilst retaining an interest in cost-cutting measures. The new labelling system produces "linerless" bi-orientated polypropylene film (BOPP) with a solvent-less adhesive. The film sticks to surfaces but not to itself, removing the need for a traditional paper back, the company said. The labels are therefore environmentally friendly because the amount of materials needed is reduced, and are environmentally friendly as they are produced in a shorter amount of time than traditional models. "The linear amount per roll of labels is doubled, giving a 50 per cent reduction in label change-over time. The resultant cost savings give this solution obvious appeal", the company said in a press release. The backless labels also have an aesthetic appeal, it also claimed, as "the potential for paper flecks or adhesive ticks gives the label a pristine finish." The new labels are suitable for plastic bottles, laminates, rigid and flexible packaging, and boxes and cases, and the machinery can be incorporated into most packaging lines, the company said.
