Gumlink unveils vitamin-enriched chewing gum

Danish chewing gum maker Gumlink says it has developed a
world-first: gum that can be enriched with vitamins.

The company, which is the only one in the gum sector to focus entirely on the business-to-business market, presented its new compressed gum at the sweets and biscuits fair ISM in Cologne, Germany last month.

The patent-pending product has two layers - chewing gum combined with a non-chewing gum layer that allows it to add ingredients that cannot support traditional gum manufacture processes.

Standard chewing gum is produced at high pressure and at high temperatures making vitamins and enzymes inactive but the compressed gum is made at low pressure and low temperatures, presenting possibilities of new combinations, according to Gumlink.

The product is also said to offer stronger taste and longer lasting flavour.

Novel delivery of nutrients is being seen increasingly as a way of making products stand out, particularly in crowded markets like vitamins. In the US, beverage company SoBe markets gum enriched with herbs and typical energy drink ingredients such as guarana.

Gumlink's product is its first launch since selling the Dandy, Stimorol and V6 brands to British Cadbury-Schweppes.
