All go at Huhtamaki

Foodservice packaging giant Huhtamaki has entered 2004 as busy as
ever. The Finnish firm has strengthened its position in the booming
drinks market through the launch of a new range of insulated cups,
and initiated a move to terminate a packaging joint venture in the

The launch of a new range of insulated cups is targeted at the burgeoning gourmet takeaway coffee market. The Premium Cuppoccino double-wall cup concept was first made available in early 2002 in 9 oz. sizes. Following the immediate success of the product, Huhtamaki began to look at ways of extending the range to 8 oz. and 12 oz. cup sizes.

Huhtamaki says that the 12 oz. cup is suitable for large coffee drinks, such as Cappuccino and Latte, whereas the smaller size is primarily intended for serving dessert coffee in quick service restaurants.

"The embossed surface of Cuppoccino gives the cup optimal insulation and heat retention properties, rigidity, and a refined, upmarket look and feel. Strong taper means ideal filling properties while ensuring space-saving stackability,"​ said business development manager Minna Laitinen from Huhtamaki's foodservice category.

Huhtamaki has also moved to end a packaging joint venture with the US packaging technology company EarthShell Corporation.

The joint venture was established in 1999 to manufacture and market biodegradable food service packaging using EarthShell's proprietary technology in Europe and potentially in parts of Asia. Huhtamaki says that the development of the manufacturing process, which is at the responsibility of EarthShell Corporation, has been repeatedly delayed against original projections.

Huhtamaki​ has not made material investments in the joint venture and faces no write-off charges on termination.
