Leading lithographic printer of wet glue labels, Buckleys, has been named UK Label Printer of the Year at the 2002 Print Week Awards. The prize was awarded for the company's innovative techniques in drinks labelling.

The annual ceremony, held in honour of Britain's most outstanding printing businesses, saw Buckleys win the category for the second consecutive year.

The panel of judges was impressed by Buckleys' technical expertise and application of print enhancement processes such as special colours, spot varnishes and foil blocking. These were successfully used to create eye-catching labels for a range of well-known drinks brands.

Its four entries, for Tesco Finest Morello Cherry Crush, Vermouth Rosso and Bianco, Delaneys Irish Cream and Bruichladdich Scotch Whisky, were printed on Buckleys' MAN Roland 700s (six colour printing presses with special finishes), with all pre-press requirements carried out in house. The entry for Bruichladdich Scotch Whisky was particularly commended for the complex gold bordering and the laddering effect used on the label.

"Winning the UK Label Printer of the Year title again clearly demonstrates our expertise in using the latest equipment and specialist printing techniques not only to print, but also to enhance label designs for our customers," commented Tony Stevens, Buckleys' sales director. "We have made a significant investment in excess of £2 million (€3.1m) in our site over the last three years and are committed to delivering a consistently high quality, innovative and reliable printing service to customers across the UK.

"The Print Week Award clearly shows that this strategy is paying dividends - we beat tough competition to win the recognition of the printing industry as a whole and maintain our position."

The company claims that by managing all the processes in-house - from origination through to transport -it is has been able to ensure accuracy and consistency in colour and detail.
