Crown has launched two-step thermochromic cans: which change color when the beverage is chilled; but then also reveal another design once the drink has been consumed.

Standard thermochromic technology changes the color of the can once the drink is chilled, telling consumers when the beverage is at the perfect drinking temperature.

However, the Reveal technology from Crown Bevcan Europe and Middle East uses two different thermochromic inks, allowing a third image to be displayed after consumption.

“When you take an ambient can and chill it, you get one effect. As it warms up – as the product is consumed – you get a secondary effect,” explained Matt Twiss, marketing and business development director, Crown Bevcan Europe and Middle East, as he demonstrated the technology for this publication at Brau Beviale in Germany this month.

An application for this technology could be as a competition metric, he adds. For example, once the beverage has been drunk and the can warms up, a message that says whether a consumer has won a competition could be revealed.
