A shift towards lower priced table wines helped lift Spanish wine
exports in the first quarter of the year, but the lower revenues
mean that double-digit volume gains were rather more modest when
converted into value figures.
Spanish wine producers posted an impressive rise in export volumes
in the first eight months of the year, but an inexplicable 14 per
cent drop in the average price per litre meant that revenues were a
mere 4 per cent higher.
Exports of Spanish Rioja wine dropped in both volume and value in
the first eight months of the year, although some markets showed
good gains. The US, for example, appears to have swapped French
wines for Spanish following the Iraq...
Exports of Spanish wine grew by less than 1 per cent last year in
both volume and value, according to the latest data. And at home
the situation is even worse, with consumption there continuing its
unrelenting decline.
Continued quality improvements have helped Spanish wine exports to
the US to double digit increases in sales for 2002, according to
preliminary figures from the FEV industry association.
The fluctuations of the sparkling wine market, which have affected
cava as much as Champagne in recent years, have prompted Spain's
Codorniu group to expand into other wine regions - most recently
the Ribera del Duero.
