Novelis has developed aluminium sheet with 90% recycled content enabling beverage can manufacturers the ability to have a product made of 70% recycled material.
Novelis has broken ground on what it claims to be the world’s largest aluminium recycling centre at its plant in Nachterstedt, Germany at a cost of $250m.
Major players in the wine industry are set to team up with
packagers and other stakeholders to improve cooperation in
supplying lightweight glass bottles to tackle environmental
concerns over the product.
A study published by WRAP suggests that the bottling of Australian
wine in the UK using light glass bottles with a high recycled
content produces roughly the same CO2 emissions during production
and transportation as PET bottling.
Starbucks has promised to use beverage packaging containing 10 per
cent recycled material from 2005, though environmentalists have
criticised the corporation's commitment.
