The Brewers Association (BA), which represents US independent brewers, has released its annual top 50 list according to craft beer sales volume: along with an overall top 50 brewers list.

In 2019, 40 out of the top 50 overall brewing companies in the US were classified as small and independent craft brewing companies. Three were in the top 10, among major domestic producers like Anheuser-Busch, MolsonCoors and Constellation.

For the past several years, D.G Yuengling & Son, Inc., Boston Beer Co., Sierra Nevada Beer Co., and New Belgium Brewing Co. have taken the top four spots of craft brewing companies, respectively. This remained unchanged in 2019.

Duvel Moortgat, Gambrinus, Bell’s Brewery, Inc., CANarchy, Stone Brewing Co., and Artisanal Brewing Ventures round out the top 10 independents.

Bart Watson, chief economist at BA, said “Although 2020 will be a markedly different year than 2019 for the craft brewing market, these companies are well positioned to help the craft category weather the current market uncertainty and rebound with the flavor, variety, and innovation that beer lovers have come to expect from small brewers.”

BA will release its State of the Industry report via webinar in mid-April. It is typically announced at the annual Craft Brewers Conference, but the event was cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was due to take place April 19-22 in San Antonio.

A full 2019 industry analysis that includes regional trends and sales by individual breweries will be published in the May/June issue of The New Brewer, and available in May 2020.
