The rise of syndrome X (& actions to combat it)
Like many nations, Japan is confronting rising rates of syndrome X - a modern confluence of lifestyle and diet-led problems ranging from obesity to diabetes, heart disease and inflammation.
Responding to the situation, the Japanese government compels over-40s to have mandatory medical check-ups for syndrome X symptoms.
In a report on the market analyst Euromonitor observed, "By starting the mandatory check-ups, the government sought to raise people’s awareness of lifestyle diseases and early prevention. Due to the greater awareness of their health condition, an increasing number of Japanese consumers are exercising more regularly and paying more attention to their diets, especially the amount of fat and sugar they take in."
