The Paulaner Brewery of Germany has implemented vermicon's VIT-Bier testing range for the detection of beerspoiling bacteria.

Rapid testing by bacteria specialists in Munich means that breweries canquickly and reliably detect beer contaminations, VIT-Bier claims.

Peter Winter, manager forquality assurance at Paulaner in Munich explained: "We apply the rapid testVIT-Bier for the detection of possible bacterial contamination in the yeast.Reliable results as to whether a bacterial contamination is present areavailable within two instead of seven days. This time saving makes ourquality control safer and more effective."

As a consequence of the successful testing programme a master agreement for the use of VIT-Products has been made with Paulaner.

Dr. Claudia Beimfohr, Chief Technology Officer of vermicon: "We are pleased about the cooperation with Paulaner. We have already worked closelytogether in the development of VIT-Bier. Due to this vermicon was able tolaunch a product that completely meets the practical needs of the breweries".

The company markets two rapid tests for beer: VIT-Bier plus L. brevisdetects all beer spoiling lactic acid bacteria as well as the mostfrequently occurring beer contaminant Lactobacillus brevis. Suspect samples from the filling area can additionally be tested withVIT-Bier Megasphaera/Pectinatus for the presence of Megasphaera cerevisaeand all bacteria of the genus Pectinatus. Both test kits can be applied withminimal handling in all stages of the brewing process, vermicon says.

The tests are based on the gene probe technology VIT (vermiconidentification technology), which has made bacteria visible in such operations for the first time. vermicon has programmed gene probes and coupled themwith fluorescent dye. The gene probes penetrate the bacteria and illuminatethem. vermicon claims that the advantages of its test kits in comparison totraditional detection methods are speed, certainty and specificity.
