Crown launches tamper-proof bottled water closure

Crown Holdings has introduced a plastic closure for bottled water
that combines economic 26.7-mm sizing with tamper-proof technology
and a triple thread bottle finish.

Crown Holdings affiliate Crown Beverage Closures says that the closure, called AquaGuard, is one of the smallest closures to feature tamper-proof sealing. The company also claims that because the product is made with HDPE resin, the closure has no impact on product taste.

The closure features a patented inside plug seal capable of holding pressure up to 30 PSI together with Crown's second-generation PolyGuard tamper-evident band. In addition, the plug seal remains engaged until after the tamper-evident band is broken, ensuring a secure package from bottler to consumer.

"With the bottled water industry solidly moving from 28-mm to 26.7-mm, we're delighted to bring Crown's innovation to bottlers and consumers in this new economical closure size," said Patrick Nash, Crown Beverage Closures general manager. "AquaGuard delivers cost savings and superior brand protection to bottlers while consumers enjoy a more convenient package."

The new range of tamper-proof bottle closures is the latest in a line of Crown innovations designed to meet strict quality requirements. The company recently launched a series of pre-designed metal closures for European manufacturers of jams and honey to help companies achieve greater cost-effectiveness while ensuring complete air-tightness.

Crown is confident that the concept will be a success, as they offer medium and small producers high-performance lids without the need to invest in customised metal closures.

"Medium and smaller scale producers of jams and honey can now cap off their jars with extremely attractive closures specifically suited to the product," said Thierry Lainez, European business development manager, of Crown Closures Europe.

"Using these premium quality metal closures, they can dramatically enhance their products' shelf appeal and usability at a relatively low cost."

Crown claims that the closures offer exceptional oxygen barrier performance for long shelf life. They are suitable for hot, cold, and aseptic filling processes and can be applied either by hand or machine.
