Resource Natural Spring Water has announced the debut of its 100% recycled plastic (rPET) bottle, excluding the cap and label, to decrease post-consumer waste.

Under the Nestlé Waters portfolio, resource is one of the first bottles to be made from 100% recycled plastic available nationwide in the US.

Montclair Natural Spring Water, Canada

Other Nestlé Waters brands currently producing bottles with 50% rPET include; .5L  Deer Park 100% Natural Spring Water bottle, available in the Washington DC area; .5L Arrowhead 100% Mountain Spring Water ReBorn bottle, available in Western US; and Montclair Natural Spring Water, available in Canada, also in a 100% rPET bottle.

Debora Fillis Ryba, senior manager, sustainability, Nestlé Waters North America, told FoodProductionDaily, with the launch, the brand hopes to focus attention on the uses of rPET, while reinforcing the importance of bottle-to-bottle recycling.

Nestlé Waters North America is consistently exploring new environmentally-minded packaging options as well as ways to increase awareness of the benefits of recycling,” she said.

The company is committed to increasing plastic (PET) beverage bottle recycling rates to 60% by 2018. The resource 100% rPET bottle creates domestic demand for rPET through closed-loop recycling, or bottle-to-bottle recycling, continuing the lifecycle of plastic—from bottle to recycled bottle to recycled bottle—reducing the need for new material.

It’s an exciting step that supports Nestlé Waters’ long-standing mission to advance and promote innovative waste reduction across its entire family of beverage brands.”

'It is important to educate people'

Resource was launched nationally in 2013 and the brand introduced its next-generation bottle made of 100% recycled plastic (rPET) this month.

Ryba added, Nestlé is focused on the development of next-generation packaging which can be made from renewable resources that require less energy or produce zero waste.

The brand feels it is important to educate people about the possibility of using recycled materials again and again to make other items, and using recycled materials in their supply chain is one way they can encourage recycling while reducing package container waste,” she said.

Leon Farahnik, founder/CEO, CarbonLITE Industries, a producer of food-grade, post-consumer recycled PET claims bottle-to-bottle recycling is one of the most effective ways to reduce landfill waste, reduce the carbon footprint, conserve natural resources and control the environmental impact of sourcing and creating new packaging.

Currently under one third of PET materials in the US are recycled and brands such as resource, with their commitment to 100% rPET packaging, represent a pivotal shift in the industry to improve recycling standards among corporations and consumers,” he said.

Resource is available in 700ml and 1L bottles at major retailers across the country for approximately $1.29 (700ml) and $1.69 (1L).
