Fire and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) teams are on the scene of an ammonia leak at the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Speedway, Indianapolis, US.

Fire crews were called to the incident at about 2am today after employees in the plant were transferring liquid ammonia when it spilled or leaked from its container.

So far the teams have assessed the plant and have found no active leak. They are currently inside the building taking air samples to make sure the air is safe to breathe.

It is not known if any employees sustained injuries as a result of the spill.

This is the second incident to have occurred at the Coca-Cola US bottling plant this year.

BeverageDaily reported Coca-Cola’s Indianapolis centre shut down production in February, following an ammonia leak.

A spokesperson from The Coca-Cola Company said at the time: a ‘leak in a pipe fitting’ was responsible for the incident.

“All employees were safely evacuated and no one required medical attention,” he said.

Ammonia is typically used in the refrigeration process in bottling operations.
