A 170-year old beer found in a shipwreck is to be recreated by the Finnish-based brewery Stallhagen and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

The yeast in the salvaged beer from the 1840s shipwreck found off the coast of the Åland Islands has been analysed by VTT’s scientists who will recreate the original beer, as well as new brews, by using the fungus in the ale.

The beer brewing techniques used two centuries ago caused Saccharomyces pastorianus to grow, which is a natural hybrid of two yeast strains and is of interest to brewers today.
