The Can Manufacturers Institute says it is mystified by a recent study that questioned the safety of stay tabs on drink cans.

Lane Donnelly, radiologist-in-chief at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, has collected evidence that she says indicates that the switch from pull-tabs to stay-tabs may not have even reduced the number of ingestions. To read the original article on her research click here .

Responding to the claims, Robert Budway, president of the Can Manufacturers Institute, said: “We’ve never heard this before. These tabs stay on unless you tear them off, and they don't come off readily. They’re manufactured and designed to stay on.”

Rexam said beverage can manufacturers in Europe are also aware of the recent research and support the view of the Can Manufacturers Institute in the US.
