Western Australia’s Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor has appointed a committee to review the state’s existing liquor laws. It has been charged with examining the regulatory framework for the consumption, licencing, marketing and supply of alcohol.
The review comes in the wake of public concern about excessive consumption of liquor in WA, as well as calls to tighten regulations by Curtin University’s McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth.
But given the composition of the committee, it seems that the department has placed health issues on the periphery of the review. It will be chaired by John Atkins from Lotterywest, the gaming organisation, Ian Stanley of local farmers group Oil Mallee Association of Australia and Nicole Roocke from the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia.
The review committee is in the process of calling for public submissions, which must be made by February 25, ahead of its report on February 30.
