Tania Higgins from DrinkTec TV wraps up the show’s final day exploring new labeling technology from SACMI and the importance of secondary packaging to Carlsberg.

Italian company SACMI launched its Formsleeve+ machine in the spring, and insists it can reduce machine and material costs by up to 20% by integrating the formation of the tubular sleeve alongside the label application process within one single system.

“They can save in the cost of the materials, but also space within the bottling line, on logistics and also personnel,” says John Pasqua, sales director, SACMI Verona.

Reinhard Streit, CCL Label sales director, Beverage Europe, tells Higgins: “Individuality plays a very important role because producers want to stand out from one another. That happens primarily at the point of sale – so you have to use trend-setting label capabilities to make your mark.”

Direct digital decoration

Frankfurt firm Till GMBH has marketed a novel system of direct digital decoration of containers since late 2012, using its own machines capable of running from 10-600 bottles/minute.

CFO Friederike Kalusche explains: “Till machines offer, for the first time, real flexibility to fillers, as it allows every single bottle to be of a different design without slowing down the machine.

“We even have a web-to-print system connected to our machines that allows the consumer on the internet to design their own bottle,” she adds.

Myriam Shingleton, R&D director, packaging innovation, Carlsberg Breweries discusses secondary packaging, and its importance for consumer connection with the brand, advertising and handles, barcodes, etc. palletising and warehouse management.

Although Drinktec 2013 was one day shorter than in 2009 event, around 13% more visitors (66,000) attended, and Messe München MD Reinhard Pfeiffer notes its growing international appeal.
