Mario Abreu, global environment director, recycling and base materials, at Tetra Pak’s Global Environment team, tells BeverageDaily.com that while closed-loop recycling is important, the firm favors a more holistic approach to the Holy Grail for sustainable packaging.

Andrew Streeter, packaging innovation director at Datamonitor told our sister site FoodProductionDaily.com earlier this month that he believed closed-loop recycling was the Arthurian grail of sustainable packaging.

In his opening remarks to this exclusive podcast, Abreu (pictured below) tells Ben Bouckley: “You can develop the most sustainable package, but there will be no value for the consumer unless it is right for the environment, for society and also works well for business.

Abreu emphasizes the importance of recycling, and says that Tetra Pak continues to invest in infrastructure and programs to support the increase of carton recycling rates.

“However, creating sustainable packaging requires a much broader view, and that’s where we’re coming from in terms of a more holistic approach,” he says.
