US liquid packaging company Liqui-Box has announced today the acquisition of Spanish company Conotainer.

The Madrid-based company manufactures bag-in-box products, specializing in the wine and beverage segments across mainland Europe.

Ken Swanson, president and CEO of Virginia-based Liqui-Box Corporation, said the takeover extends Liqui-Box’s global reach and positions the company to serve customers from multiple locations in Europe.

Liqui-Box supplies packaging solutions in the beverage, dairy, water, wine and food industries. It also supplies packaging and filling in non-food industries, such as for motor oil, paint and coolants.

In May 2016, the company made its first acquisition, when it took over the Engineering and Flexible operations of Maverick, based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Maverick Engineering manufactures bag-in-box making equipment and Maverick Flexibles designs and manufactures specialty films and laminates for the food and beverage markets.

Liqui-Box has six locations in the US, as well as in the UK, China, Mexico and South Africa.

Joins AMERIPEN

Liqui-Box’s announcement of the acquisition comes a day after it was announced as one of two new members of The American Institute for Packaging and the Environment (AMERIPEN).

The other company to join the organization was South Carolina-based Novolex, which serves the retail, grocery, food service, hospitality, institutional and industrial markets.

Novolex, which has 43 manufacturing plants in North America, includes brands such as Hilex Poly, Heritage Bag, Novolex Custom Film & Bag, Duro Bag, Bagcraft, De Luxe, General Packaging and International Converter.

Socially-responsible packaging

AMERIPEN advocates for packaging policy developments in North America and focuses on measures that are environmentally and economically sound, as well as socially responsible.

The organization’s science-based, material-neutral approach encourages informed decision-making on packaging and the environment.
