Egypt has started a safeguard investigation on the import of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET).

It began after a documented safeguards petition was filed by Egyptian Indian Polyester Company, in which it alleged that increased imports of PET had caused serious injury to the domestic industry producing similar products.

Available data shows decreasing domestic sales, sharp decline in market share of the domestic industry, decreasing domestic production, decreasing worker productivity, and increasing losses, in conjunction with the increase of imports.

Interested parties must make themselves known to the investigating authority (The Ministry of Trade and Industry in Cairo) within 30 days after publication of the start of the investigation (8 December).

The notification was made to the World Trade Organization’s (WTO)’s Committee on Safeguards.

A safeguard investigation looks at whether increased imports of a product are causing, or is threatening to cause, serious injury to a domestic industry.

During the investigation, importers, exporters and other interested parties may present evidence and views and respond to other parties.
