Tetra Pak has announced the inauguration of its €60m packaging plant in China that operates entirely on green electricity.

The facility, in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, is among the first in the country to run solely on renewable energy, said a company statement. The estimated 20 million kWh of green power consumed on the site annually is supplied primarily from wind turbines.

Tetra Pak said the inauguration of the plant brings its total capacity in China to 50bn packs a year and that it has invested €250bn in the country over the last 30 years.

Dennis Jönsson, President of and CEO of the Tetra Pak Group, who presided over the inauguration ceremony with Finn Rausing, member of the Tetra Laval Group board, said: “Today, China has become one of our largest worldwide markets and will continue to be central to our strategy in the future.”
