The Irish Whiskey Association has launched a mentoring programme, which brings established global players together with new market entrants. This will help ensure future growth of the Irish whiskey category, says the association.

The Irish whiskey market has grown by 200% in the last decade, making it the fastest growing spirit category in the world.

The mentoring programme will give new entrants access to information and support to ensure the production of high quality products. Areas covered will include production, health and safety, licensing requirements, branding and route to market.

The mentor companies include Irish Distillers and Bushmills.

Bernard Walsh, chairman of the Irish Whiskey Association and CEO of Walsh Distillery, said: “The Irish whiskey industry is at a pivotal moment in its history. We know that there is huge consumer appetite for our products worldwide, and we only have to look to Scotland with 108 distilleries in operation to see what’s possible."

If the industry is to grow and compete internationally with other spirits, it cannot compromise on quality, he said.

"The advice and support of industry experts is invaluable in helping companies navigate what can be difficult and complex issues,” added Walsh.

David Quinn, technical director of Irish Distillers, said: “Innovation will be key to realising the full potential of Irish whiskey on the world stage.

"The mentoring partnership is mutually beneficial, with new entrants bringing new brands and stories to the global market, and established companies imparting the legacy and traditions of our founders as well as their approaches to innovation.

“We look forward to growing our relationships with other emerging companies and continuing on our journey of nurturing the Irish whiskey renaissance globally.”
