Bob Hawke, who was Australia’s Prime Minister between 1983 and 1991, has helped launch a lager brand.

A percentage of profits will go to Landcare Australia, an environmental non-profit organization that he supported in his time as Prime Minister.

Hawke’s Brewing Co was founded by Nathan Lennon and David Gibson, who took their vision to Hawke, who agreed to be part of the proposal.

Australian hops and ingredients

Hawke’s Lager, which is brewed entirely from Australian ingredients, is currently rolling out in select Sydney venues. This will be followed by cans in Camperdown Cellars from April 25, before rolling out to other retail outlets.

In 1989, Hawke helped drive national support for Landcare, and all Hawke’s financial benefits from Hawke’s Brewing Co will be donated to the organization.

The idea for Hawke’s Brewing Co came when Lennon and Gibson were working as creative directors for a New York ad agency, discussing who they’d most like to have a beer with. On their return to Australia they met the former PM and turned their idea into the business venture.

Hawke’s Lager is brewed with Australian hops, Helga, Ella & Topaz. It has an IBU rating of 18 and an ABV of 4.5%.

The brand’s tasting notes read: “Brewed with all-Australian ingredients, Hawke’s Lager has a subtle citrus aroma, light bitterness and a gentle, dry finish.”
